Dengue and Me

After a really nice Life! spread on Saturday, the horrible happened! I've got dengue fever! The mozzie curse started last Wednesday and it was a sudden onset of hell!

As time went by, I realised that my neighbourhood was a HOTSPOT for dengue... I'm not surprised. My estate has never been a model example of cleanliness and I'm sure there are lots of irresponsible residents here.

Check out the link:

At the moment, there are 29 cases of dengue at Serangoon Ave 4! That's madness! People, please put your act together!

Well, I've survived and it's no funny matter. I almost felt that I've died but lived to tell a tale. I also tasted the worst ever concoction ever, papaya leaf juice, YUCKS!!!! But I guess it helped me...

I could have been admitted to hospital but somehow, I managed to survive the worst part of the illness at home. There were times when I really felt like dying but God is good!

Please do your part to eradicate mosquito breeding in your area... it's not a laughing matter when you or your family members fall sick!

Me on Life!

It's really hard for me to believe but I was on the front cover of Saturday's Life! I was really shocked when my mum told me. I didn't really expect the story to be shown anyway and for it to be the main story and my picture on it, it's really beyond my expectations... God is good!

Thanks so much Cade for referring me to the Straits Times for the interview. Suan Chiang for writing so well and Mr Lau Fook Kong for trying to make me relaxed during the photo shoot. And also my friends (old and new) and all well-wishers (especially the guys from echoloft!) for making me feel very special on that day. I really felt like a mini-celebrity! Don't think I could handle fame very well, but it's a really nice thing to happen! Talk about fulfilling your dreams at the most unexpected times!

Like what one of my friends Ian who said... Dude, now the whole of Singapore knows how your bedroom looks like and all the Mums in Singapore are telling their kids that their rooms must be as neat as Mr Chia's... hahaha! :)

Thanks to all!

Kids Love Birthdays!

One thing I realise and that is kids love birthdays...

Here are some shots of Michelle's Birthday at her home and her nieces (Virnice, Rae) and nephew (Yang Yang) thought that we were celebrating their birthdays too... hahaha! Kids will be kids!

Peter Gabriel - Honoured in Time Magazine!

Peter Gabriel has always been one of my favourite artists. From his art-rock days in Genesis to his recent UP album, it's all been brilliant... and it's nice to read of him being honoured for his non-music works as well...

Here's a write up from Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu

I did not know Peter Gabriel from a bar of soap when I met him for the first time on his friend Sir Richard Branson's Necker Island in the Virgin Islands. But within moments, he had charmed me. I heard him sing his Biko, which still moves me to tears each time I hear it, as we stood round the piano he was playing. He volunteered to give me my first swimming lessons and was a great hit with two of my grandchildren who met him there.

What is his secret? He has a heart—in our part of the world, we would give him our highest accolade and say, "He has ubuntu." It is that marvelous quality that speaks of compassion and generosity, about sharing, about hospitality. Peter founded WOMAD (World of Music, Arts and Dance), presenting 50 festivals in more than 40 countries and conducting workshops in schools around the globe. He is a passionate human-rights advocate who participated in the 1988 Human Rights Now tour, and he co-founded Witness, which provides cameras and computers to activists.

In 2007 he and Branson co-founded the Elders, which Nelson Mandela and his wife Graça Machel launched in Johannesburg on Mandela's 89th birthday. With our world battered by so many problems—ethnic conflict, oppression of women and children, climate change—their idea was that a group of eminent people would serve as Elders for our global village. A dozen of us—including Kofi Annan, President Jimmy Carter and Fernando Cardoso (with an empty chair for Aung San Suu Kyi of Burma)—have accepted their offer and challenge.

Peter, 58, has received many awards, including the Man of Peace award given by Nobel Peace laureates. He has ubuntu, and he deserves this latest accolade richly.

Bishop Tutu, the former Anglican Archbishop of Cape Town, was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1984.

Me in the Straits Times?

I got a surprise call yesterday morning about 11am...

Caller: Hi, May I speak to Gerald?

Me: Yes, Speaking...

C: Yes, I'm a friend of Cade... I've heard you've done this webpage for Dr Erwin for his KCS Medical Centre... we really like your work and I was recommended to contact you...

M: Errr... okay... sure, how can I help?

C: I have a friend from the Straits Times who is doing a news story about people working from home... would it be okay if I give your number to her?

M: Sure... okay... thanks a lot!

C: This we hope will help promote your business further...

M: Wow, thanks a lot!

Well, sure enough, later about 3pm in the afternoon, Life! Correspondent Tay Suan Chiang came by my place and did an interview about my freelance work from home.

I'm not really sure whether if my interview was good but hopefully, my company will be featured in the Saturday papers. It would be good publicity for my business... the photographer will be coming by later about 12:30 for a photo shoot :)

That's really amazing! God is good! I never expected this to happen!

The Road to Oranges and Lemons by XTC

Was listening to XTC's "Oranges and Lemons" for the past few days, and this album just keeps getting better and better... what a lost 80s classic! Intelligent songcraft, excellent playing, very witty lyrics, and a whole lot of fun!

XTC really has a wonderful sense of humour too... I really love the way they told the history of the band and promoted the album though this funny puppet show :)

Curry, Bolly and Sari

Had a really fun time at this recent themed event at Church... here's me and my friend Ting Chun. I'm just being rude with my nose picking. We made the fake snake at my place using paper mache...
